The most profitable crops in Ukraine

Найрентабельніші агрокультури в Україні

Ukraine is one of the world’s leading agricultural countries, known for its fertile land and favorable climate for growing a variety of crops. The choice of crops to grow is a key factor in ensuring the profitability of a farm. In this article, we will analyze the most profitable crops in Ukraine and provide recommendations for their cultivation.

What crops are grown in Ukraine?

Ukrainian farmers grow a wide range of crops that can be divided into several categories:

  • Oilseeds (sunflower, rapeseed, soybeans)
  • Vegetable crops (potatoes, carrots, cabbage)
  • Cereals (wheat, corn, barley)
  • Industrial crops (sugar beet)
  • Legumes (soybeans, peas)

Each of these categories has its own advantages and specifics of cultivation. According to the Ukrainian Grain Association, during the marketing season 2023/2024, which ended on June 30, 2024, Ukraine exported 57.5 million tons of grains and oilseeds.

Next, let’s take a closer look at the most profitable crops.

Sunflower

Sunflower seeds

Sunflower is one of the most popular oilseeds in Ukraine. It occupies a significant portion of the country’s arable land due to its high profitability and resistance to various climatic conditions. In 2024, Ukraine exported just over 300 thousand tons of sunflower, while producing 14.2 million tons. Thus, the total volume of sunflower processing in Ukraine amounted to 13.5 million tons.

Advantages: sunflower can produce high yields even in unfavorable conditions. Sunflower oil is in demand both on the domestic and international markets. Sunflower can grow on different soil types, making it attractive for cultivation in different regions of Ukraine.

Vegetables

Carrots

Vegetable crops, such as potatoes, carrots, cabbage and others, are an important component of the Ukrainian agricultural sector. They are grown both on large farms and on small private plots.

Advantages: Many vegetables have a short growing cycle, which allows for harvesting several times a year. Vegetables are highly profitable due to stable market demand. Some vegetables (e.g. potatoes) are well stored, which allows them to be sold throughout the year.

Rapeseed

Rapeseed

Rapeseed is another important oilseed crop in Ukraine, used for the production of oil and biodiesel. In addition, rapeseed contributes to soil improvement due to its properties. In 2023/2024, Ukraine exported 3.7 million tons of rapeseed worth $1.4 billion, with a production of 4.5 million tons.

Advantages: Rapeseed has a high oil content, which makes it attractive for the processing industry. Rapeseed oil is used to produce environmentally friendly biodiesel. It is a popular crop both on the domestic and international markets.

Cereals

Cereals

Grain crops such as wheat, corn and barley are the backbone of Ukrainian agriculture. They occupy a significant portion of arable land and are an important export commodity. High yields and stable demand on world markets make grain crops very profitable.

In particular, wheat exports amounted to 18.4 million tons, worth $3 billion, against a production of about 22 million tons. During this period, almost 2.5 million tons of barley were also exported, worth $376 million, with a total production of 5.8 million tons. Ukraine exported 29.3 million tons of corn, worth $4.7 billion, which is the same as last year’s production of 29.6 million tons.

Advantages: Grain crops can yield high yields if agricultural technologies are followed. Wheat and corn are the world’s staple foods, which ensures stable demand for them. Grain crops are well stored, which allows them to be sold throughout the year.

Soybeans

Soybeans

Soybeans are another important crop for Ukraine. It is used as animal feed and as a raw material for soybean oil production. High yields and stable demand on global markets make soybeans very attractive to farmers. In the 2023/2024 marketing year, Ukraine exported nearly 3 million tons of soybeans worth $1.1 billion, while producing 4.9 million tons.

Advantages: Soybeans have a high protein content, making them an important crop for feed production. Soybeans are in demand both on the domestic and international markets. Soybeans can grow on different types of soil and in different climatic conditions.

Sugar beet

Sugar beet

Sugar beet is the main technical crop for sugar production in Ukraine. The main regions where sugar beet is grown in Ukraine are Vinnytsia, Poltava and Khmelnytsky regions.

Next year, global sugar prices are expected to fall to between $480 and $500 per ton of finished product. This means that the income per 1 hectare of land where sugar beets will be grown could reach between $680 and $700.

Advantages: Sugar beet can produce high yields, provided that agricultural technologies are followed. Sugar is a necessary food product, which ensures a stable demand for sugar beet. Ukrainian sugar has great export potential, which makes sugar beet an attractive crop to grow.

Unprofitable crops

Not all crops are profitable to grow in Ukraine. Unprofitable crops include:

  • Cotton – cotton cultivation requires significant resources and is not profitable in Ukraine.
  • Sorghum – Despite being a drought-resistant crop, the market demand for sorghum remains low.
  • Flax – flax cultivation is costly and unprofitable due to low demand for flax products.

Growing crops

Growing crops in Ukraine requires careful planning and investment. Farmers need to consider climate conditions, seed selection, cultivation technologies and marketing strategy. High-quality seeds, modern technologies and efficient resource management can significantly increase the profitability of agribusiness.

Ukrainian agriculture has great potential for development, and the right choice of crops to grow can provide stable and high incomes for farmers.
